How to use
- Open the PDF you want to number.
- Choose where the numbers go. There are six positions, from top left to bottom right.
- Pick a format and the number to start from. The preview shows what the first page will look like.
- Choose whether to number every page or only some of them, then press Add page numbers to download the result.
Why add page numbers
Page numbers make long documents easier to navigate, discuss and print. Reviewers can point to “page 14”, printed stacks can be put back in order if they are dropped, and many submissions such as theses, legal filings and tenders require numbered pages. When a PDF is produced by merging several files, the original numbering is often missing or inconsistent. This tool adds a clean, uniform sequence in seconds.
Options
- Position. Six positions cover the usual conventions: centered at the bottom is the most common, while top or bottom corners suit reports and books.
- Format. Choose a plain number, “1 / N”, “- 1 -” or “Page 1 of N”.
- First number. Start from any number, which is useful when a document continues from another file or when a cover page should not count.
- Pages. Number every page or only a range, such as 3- to skip a cover and a table of contents.
How it works
The PDF is opened in your browser, and the numbers are written onto each chosen page as real text, not as an image, so they stay sharp at any zoom and can be found by search. Pages that are stored with a rotation are handled automatically, so the number always appears in the position you chose on the page as it is displayed. The rest of the page content is untouched, and pages outside the range are copied exactly as they were.
Example
A 20-page report has a cover and a one-page table of contents. Choose “Only these pages”, enter 3-, set the first number to 1 and pick “Page 1 of N”. The result shows “Page 1 of 18” on the first page of the main text and “Page 18 of 18” on the last page.
Privacy
All processing happens locally in your browser, so confidential documents stay on your device.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I skip the cover page?
- Yes. Choose "Only these pages" and enter, for example, 2- to number from page 2 to the end. Set the first number to 1 if the page after the cover should be page 1.
- What does "1 / N" count?
- N is the last number that will be printed. If you number pages 2 to 10 starting at 1, the numbers run from 1 / 9 to 9 / 9.
- Will the numbers cover my content?
- Numbers are placed about 1 cm from the edge, where most documents have a margin. If your pages use the full area, try a different corner or a smaller font size.
- Does it work with rotated pages?
- Yes. The tool takes each page's rotation into account, so the number appears in the chosen position and reads the right way up.
- Is my PDF uploaded?
- No. The numbers are added by your browser on your device, and nothing is sent to a server.
- Are pages outside the chosen range changed?
- No. Only the pages you choose get a number; every other page is left exactly as it was.
