Choosing a format

Format Compression Transparency Best for
JPG Lossy (small files) No Photos
PNG Lossless (larger files) Yes Logos, icons, screenshots, images with text
WebP Lossy or lossless Yes Photos and graphics for websites

JPG is the most widely used format for photos, where colors blend smoothly. It keeps files small by discarding some detail each time it is saved, which can leave smudges around sharp text and lines.

PNG never loses quality when saved and supports transparent backgrounds. It is ideal for logos and screenshots that need crisp edges, but photos saved as PNG are several times larger than JPG.

WebP is a web format developed by Google. Photos are smaller than JPG, and it also supports transparency. Every modern browser opens it, but some older desktop programs do not.

Common conversions

  • WebP to JPG: when an image saved from a website will not open in an editor or document.
  • PNG to JPG: when a large photo saved as PNG needs to be emailed or uploaded.
  • JPG to PNG: when you want to stop further quality loss while you keep editing.
  • JPG or PNG to WebP: to make images on a blog or online store lighter and faster to load.

Quality settings

JPG and WebP let you pick a quality level. The default of 90% is nearly indistinguishable from the original. For even smaller files, use the image compressor. PNG is lossless, so it has no quality setting.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I open a WebP image?
Some older image editors and office programs do not support WebP. Converting a WebP saved from the web to JPG or PNG lets you open it anywhere. Choose JPG for photos and PNG for logos or images with a transparent background.
What happens to transparency when I convert PNG to JPG?
JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background color you choose, white by default. Save as PNG or WebP to keep a transparent background.
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. PNG stops further quality loss, but it cannot restore detail that was lost when the image was saved as JPG. The file only gets bigger, so convert to PNG when you need transparency or plan to keep editing.
Can it convert HEIC, GIF or BMP?
Any format your browser can open can be converted. GIF and BMP work in most browsers, but animated GIFs keep only the first frame. HEIC opens only in some browsers such as Safari; if it cannot be opened, the tool tells you.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Conversion happens in your browser and your images never leave your device. The output does not keep EXIF metadata.
