When you need a case converter

Changing case by hand is slow and easy to get wrong. Common reasons to use a converter:

  • You received a paragraph typed in ALL CAPS and need it readable again.
  • You are writing headlines or email subject lines and want consistent title case.
  • You are naming variables, database columns, CSS classes or URL slugs and need a consistent style such as snake_case or kebab-case.
  • You pasted a list of labels from a spreadsheet and want them converted into identifiers in one go.

The formats explained

UPPER CASE and lower case change every letter. Title Case capitalizes the first letter of each word and lowers the rest, which also cleans up text that was typed with Caps Lock on. Sentence case lowers everything and then capitalizes the first letter of the text, the first letter after a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark, and the first letter of each new line.

The programming formats first break the text into words. Spaces, punctuation and an existing change from lower to upper case all count as word boundaries, and runs of capitals are treated as acronyms. For example, “XMLHttpRequest” is read as “XML”, “Http” and “Request”, so its snake_case form is “xml_http_request”. Numbers stay attached to the word they follow, so “version2Update” becomes “version2-update” in kebab-case. Emoji and symbols are dropped from these formats because they are not valid in most identifiers.

Style guides and exceptions

Formal style guides such as AP or Chicago keep short words like “a”, “of” and “the” in lower case inside a title. This tool capitalizes every word, which is the most common convention for web headings and is easy to adjust. Proper nouns and brand names with unusual capitalization, such as “iPhone” or “eBay”, also need a manual touch after conversion.

Example

The input “monthly SALES report – draft” becomes “Monthly Sales Report – Draft” in Title Case, “Monthly sales report – draft” in Sentence case, “monthlySalesReportDraft” in camelCase and “monthly_sales_report_draft” in snake_case.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between title case and sentence case?
Title case capitalizes the first letter of every word, as in "The Quick Brown Fox". Sentence case capitalizes only the first letter of each sentence, as in "The quick brown fox." Headlines often use title case; body text and many modern interfaces use sentence case.
Why did my acronym become lower case?
Title case and sentence case lower the rest of each word so that text typed in ALL CAPS is cleaned up. That also turns "NASA" into "Nasa". Fix acronyms by hand afterwards, or convert only the parts of your text that need it.
How are camelCase, snake_case and kebab-case built?
The text is split into words at spaces, punctuation and existing case changes, then the words are joined. camelCase joins them with capitals ("userName"), snake_case with underscores ("user_name") and kebab-case with hyphens ("user-name").
Can I convert a whole list of names at once?
Yes. For camelCase, snake_case and kebab-case each line is converted separately, so a list of column names stays a list.
What happens to Korean, Chinese or Japanese text?
These scripts have no upper or lower case, so they are left unchanged. In the programming formats they are treated as words and joined like any other word.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The conversion runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
